San Diego’s The Legends are an eight-piece Motown, Doo-Wop, and early Rock ’n’ Roll show band founded by Howard Blank in 1987. They offer anything from a 30-minute revue to a full evening of dancing, with costumes, choreography, and tributes spanning the 1950s through 1970s.
The Legends are a San Diego-based eight-piece show band founded by Howard Blank in 1987, with more than 20 years in the San Diego music scene. Their format centers on Motown, Doo-Wop, and early Rock ’n’ Roll, and they can tailor the show from a full evening of dancing to a 30-minute revue.
The band’s lineup includes drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, and sax. Their show features tributes to 1950s through 1970s Rock ’n’ Roll associated with artists including Tina Turner, Dion, The Supremes, Frank Sinatra, and The Marcels, with wigs, costumes, and choreography as part of the presentation.
Over the years, Howard Blank has brought in several area musicians, including members of Sha Na Na and The Syndicate of Sound. Members of The Legends have performed at Southern California venues including Sea World, La Costa Resort, Viejas, Pala, Barona, area casinos, country clubs, resorts, concert series, and the 65th Annual Mother Goose Parade.
The Legends have shared the stage with The Coasters, The Drifters, The Shirelles, and Martha Reeves & the Vandellas. They also appeared in a fundraiser to benefit brain-injured veterans alongside Johnny Tillotson, Tommy Mara, Lou Christie, Ken Brady, Little Anthony, Dave Sumerville, Jocko from Sha Na Na, Sonny Turner, Lynn Anderson, Jimmy Stephens, and Nancy Sinatra, and showcased at the San Diego Convention Center through Dick Clark Productions. They were also part of Legends of Rock ’n’ Roll at the Concord Pavilion featuring Wolfman Jack and Bobby Freeman.
The group includes an original member of The Outsiders, known for Time Won’t Let Me from 1966, listed in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
